Short Answer

HDPE pressure pipe is commonly specified by sizing system, nominal size, controlled OD, material and DR. A 4-in. IPS PE4710 DR 11 pipe has a 4.500 in. OD and 0.409 in. minimum wall, while 4-in. DIPS is 4.800 in. OD. Lower DR means a thicker wall. Use the current standard that matches the size system: D3035-22 for IPS 1/2 to 3, and F714-25 for IPS 4+, DIPS 3+ and metric 90 mm+.

HDPE Pipe Size Chart

Start with the PE4710 IPS DR 11 chart. It separates nominal size, controlled OD, minimum wall, published average ID and weight.

How to Read the Chart

A complete HDPE designation needs the sizing system, nominal size, controlled OD, DR, wall thickness and material/application basis. For example, 4-in. IPS PE4710 DR 11 is much more meaningful than simply 4-in. HDPE pipe.

How to Read HDPE Pipe Dimensions

Nominal Size

A size designation, not necessarily the measured OD.

Outside Diameter

The controlled OD within a sizing system.

Wall Thickness

The minimum wall required by the dimensional specification.

Inside Diameter

Distinguish calculated ID from the manufacturer-published average ID.

Dimension Ratio

OD divided by the minimum wall thickness.

HDPE pipe geometry. Manufacturer-published average ID can differ from the simple OD – 2t calculation.

HDPE Dimension Ratio: DR

DR = OD ÷ t t = OD ÷ DR

Lower DR means a thicker wall for the same OD. Higher DR means a thinner wall. DR is a ratio, not a wall thickness.

HDPE Wall Thickness Calculation

1

4-in. IPS DR 11 Minimum Wall

Given: OD = 4.500 in., DR = 11
1
t = 4.500 ÷ 11.
2
t = 0.4091 in.
Result: Minimum wall = 0.409 in.

Practical interpretation: This agrees with the PE4710 product data.

HDPE Inside Diameter Calculation

ID(geometric) = OD − 2t
2

4-in. IPS DR 11 Geometric ID

Given: OD = 4.500 in., minimum wall = 0.409 in.
1
ID = 4.500 − 2(0.409).
2
ID = 3.682 in.
Result: Geometric ID = 3.682 in.

Practical interpretation: The manufacturer-published average ID is 3.633 in. because its convention uses nominal OD and minimum wall plus 6%. Label the two values separately.

For broad ID references see the Pipe Inside Diameter Chart.

IPS HDPE Pipe Size Chart

IPS is the Iron Pipe Size outside-diameter system. The same IPS nominal size uses the same controlled OD across DRs. Small and large sizes fall under different active standards, which the table labels.

CTS and Metric HDPE Sizing

HDPE may also use CTS (Copper Tube Size) or metric OD systems. Do not mix those values into an IPS or DIPS table. ASTM F714-25 covers metric 90 mm and larger under its stated scope.

DR vs. SDR in HDPE Pipe

DR is the broad dimension-ratio concept. SDR means a standardized dimension ratio series. Use the term that the governing standard or product marking uses, and do not casually replace every DR designation with SDR.

Common HDPE DR Sizes

Common HDPE dimension ratios include DR 7, 7.3, 9, 11, 13.5, 15.5, 17, 21, 26 and 32.5. Not every DR is available for every size, material, standard or application.

DR 11 HDPE Pipe Size Chart

The DR 11 table at the top is the main reference. It has the 1 to 12 in. IPS PE4710 product sizes, controlled OD, minimum wall, published average ID and PPI TR-7 weight. In the product basis shown here, DR 11 carries a 200 psi water-service pressure class at 73.4°F.

DR 17 HDPE Pipe Size Chart

DR 17 has a thinner wall and a larger ID than DR 11 at the same IPS OD. The average IDs below use the same manufacturer convention as the DR 11 table (nominal OD minus twice the minimum wall plus 6%).

OD and wall from DR = OD/t, rounded to three decimals. Average ID follows the manufacturer convention (nominal OD minus 2 × min wall × 1.06), so actual ID varies.

HDPE Pressure Rating vs. DR

Pressure rating is not determined by DR alone. The material, hydrostatic design basis or stress, design factor, DR, temperature, fluid or service and governing standard all matter. For PE4710 water-service products under the manufacturer basis used here, common reference pressure classes are below. They are not universal DR definitions.

PE4710 water-service reference at stated manufacturer conditions, commonly 73.4°F or 80°F. Temperature and application factors apply.

DR 11200 psi
DR 13.5160 psi
DR 17125 psi
DR 21100 psi

HDPE Pressure-Rating Formula

PR = 2S ÷ (DR − 1)

PR is pressure rating under the applicable basis, and S is the allowable or design hydrostatic stress used in that system. Establish material, design factor, temperature, service and governing standard before using the relationship. Do not substitute a generic material stress value.

What Is PE4710?

PE4710 is a modern polyethylene material designation used widely in U.S. pressure-pipe systems. For this chart, the useful points are the material marking, the pressure-rating basis, the standards and the pipe print line. AWWA C906 specifically references PE4710 for waterworks pressure pipe and fittings.

Example of HDPE pipe identification markings showing the manufacturer, nominal pipe size, PE4710 material designation, DR 11 dimension ratio, ASTM F714 and AWWA C906 standards, and pressure rating information.

ASTM D3035 HDPE Pipe

ASTM D3035-22 is the active controlled-OD PE pipe standard for IPS 1/2 through 3. Its scope is narrower than older editions, and it directs DIPS and larger sizes toward standards such as F714 or AWWA C906. Do not repeat legacy charts that use D3035 for all large HDPE sizes.

ASTM F714 HDPE Pipe

ASTM F714-25 is the active large-diameter PE dimensional standard for DIPS size 3 and larger, IPS size 4 and larger, and metric 90 mm and larger. It covers both pressure and nonpressure applications, including water, sewage, industrial liquids, effluent and slurries.

AWWA C906 HDPE Water Pipe

AWWA C906 covers PE pressure pipe and fittings for waterworks, with PE4710 and sizes 4 through 65 in. in the cited scope. Project specifications and the current adopted standard control waterworks systems.

HDPE Pipe Weight

Pipe weight rises with OD and wall thickness, so lower DR generally means more weight. The main product table shows 4-in. IPS PE4710 DR 11 at 2.31 lb/ft. Comparable manufacturer data lists about 1.92 lb/ft at DR 13.5 and 1.69 lb/ft at DR 15.5. This page uses the figures only to show DR effects. See the Pipe Weight Chart and the Pipe Weight Calculator for broader estimating.

1
A = π × 3.633² ÷ 4.
2

Result: About 10.37 in².

Practical interpretation: Hydraulic capacity requires velocity, fluid conditions, roughness and more than area. See the Pipe Flow Rate Chart and the Pipe Volume Chart.

HDPE Pipe Connections and Fittings

HDPE connection methods include butt fusion, electrofusion, mechanical connections, flange adapters and transition fittings. Connection selection must match the OD system, DR, material and product compatibility. ASTM F2620 is an important heat-fusion procedure reference, while the dimensional product standards remain separate.

Common HDPE Pipe Sizing Mistakes

Treating nominal size as measured OD

Verify the sizing system.

Failing to distinguish IPS from DIPS

Same nominal label can mean different OD.

Treating HDPE like Schedule 40 or 80 steel pipe

HDPE commonly uses DR.

Assuming DR and SDR always mean the same thing

Use the actual designation.

Assuming DR alone determines pressure rating

Material and service matter.

Assuming lower DR means thinner pipe

Lower DR means thicker wall.

Calling OD − 2 min wall the manufacturer average ID

The conventions differ.

Using old D3035 scope for large pipe

D3035-22 is IPS 1/2 through 3.

Ignoring ASTM F714

It covers IPS 4+, DIPS 3+ and metric 90 mm+.

Ignoring AWWA C906 for waterworks

Waterworks needs its own standard context.

Mixing PE material grades

Pressure and product data vary.

Ignoring temperature derating

Pressure capability changes with service.

Selecting fittings from nominal size alone

Check the OD system.

Assuming every 4-in. HDPE has 4.500 in. OD

DIPS 4 is 4.800 in.

HDPE Pipe Size FAQs

What sizes does HDPE pipe come in?

HDPE is sold in IPS, DIPS, CTS and metric OD systems. This chart lists IPS 3/4 through 24 in. and DIPS 3 through 24 in. Product and standard scope varies by size.

What is the OD of 2-inch HDPE pipe?

2-in. IPS HDPE has a 2.375 in. OD. A 2-in. DIPS pipe is not a common DIPS size in the F714 scope, which begins at DIPS 3.

What is the OD of 4-inch HDPE pipe?

4-in. IPS HDPE is 4.500 in. OD. 4-in. DIPS HDPE is 4.800 in. OD.

Is 4-inch HDPE actually 4 inches?

No. The nominal label is not the measured OD. A 4-in. IPS pipe measures 4.500 in. OD, while 4-in. DIPS measures 4.800 in.

What is DR in HDPE pipe?

Dimension ratio: DR = OD divided by minimum wall thickness. Lower DR means a thicker wall at the same OD.

What is SDR in HDPE?

Standard dimension ratio. It is a standardized DR series. Use the term and designation shown in the governing standard or product marking.

What is DR 11 HDPE pipe?

A pipe with an OD-to-minimum-wall ratio of 11. For 4-in. IPS, OD is 4.500 in. and minimum wall is 0.409 in.

What is DR 17 HDPE pipe?

A pipe with an OD-to-minimum-wall ratio of 17. For 4-in. IPS, minimum wall is 0.265 in. and the average ID is about 3.938 in. in the manufacturer convention used here.

Is lower DR stronger or thicker?

For the same OD, lower DR means a thicker wall. Pressure capability still depends on the material, standard, temperature and application.

How do I calculate HDPE wall thickness?

Divide controlled OD by DR. For 4.500 in. OD at DR 11, 4.500 ÷ 11 = 0.409 in.

How do I calculate HDPE inside diameter?

Geometrically, ID = OD − 2t. Manufacturer-published average ID may differ because of the wall convention and tolerance used.

What is IPS HDPE?

HDPE using the Iron Pipe Size outside-diameter system, such as 4.500 in. OD for nominal 4 in.

What is DIPS HDPE?

HDPE using the Ductile Iron Pipe Size outside-diameter system, such as 4.800 in. OD for nominal 4 in.

Is IPS the same as DIPS?

No. IPS and DIPS use different ODs at the same nominal size, so fittings and fusion components are not automatically interchangeable.

Is HDPE sized by ID or OD?

Pressure HDPE standards use controlled outside diameter and DR. ID changes with DR and wall thickness.

Is HDPE Schedule 40 or Schedule 80?

HDPE pressure pipe is commonly specified by DR, not by the steel or PVC Schedule 40/80 system. Do not apply schedule tables unless the product specification explicitly uses them.

What is PE4710?

A modern polyethylene material designation used widely in U.S. pressure pipe. Its marking, DR, standard and application basis are used in product selection.

What is ASTM D3035?

The active D3035-22 specification for controlled-OD PE pipe applies to IPS 1/2 through 3. Older editions had broader scope.

What is ASTM F714?

The active F714-25 specification for larger PE pipe covers IPS 4 and larger, DIPS 3 and larger, and metric 90 mm and larger.

What is AWWA C906?

A waterworks standard for PE pressure pipe and fittings in PE4710, 4 through 65 in. (100 to 1,650 mm) in the cited scope.
