New Lawn Versus Overseeding Rates

New lawn seeding starts from bare soil, so the full seeding rate applies to maximize germination coverage across every square foot. Overseeding an established lawn works differently, since existing turf already covers most of the ground and only needs supplemental seed to fill thin spots and boost density.

Most seed suppliers and turfgrass rate charts set the overseeding rate at roughly half the new lawn rate for the same species. Applying a full new-lawn rate during overseeding can cause overcrowding, which increases competition for light and nutrients among seedlings rather than improving density.
