How Bricks Per Square Foot Is Calculated
The number of bricks needed for a wall face depends on brick size and mortar joint thickness, not a flat industry rule of thumb. The formula below, from BIA Technical Note 10, is what this calculator uses internally.
BPSF = 144 / ((L + J) x (H + J))
Bricks needed = Net Area x BPSF x Wythe Count x (1 + Waste Factor)
L and H are the brick face length and height in inches, J is the mortar joint thickness in inches, and BPSF is bricks per square foot of wall face. Net area means gross wall area minus door and window openings.
Coverage rates per BIA Technical Note 10, Dimensioning and Estimating Brick Masonry, Gobrick.com. This calculator recomputes the exact figure for your selected joint thickness rather than using this fixed table.
For material quantities beyond brick count, the brick calculator and concrete block calculator break down unit counts without cost, while this tool focuses on the full project budget.
