Every stair shape reduces to three equations. Number of risers equals total rise divided by your target riser height, rounded up. Riser height equals total rise divided by that riser count, which keeps every step identical, as IRC R311.7.5.1 requires.
Total run equals tread count times tread depth, and stringer length equals the square root of total rise squared plus total run squared, the Pythagorean hypotenuse of the rise and run triangle.

Variation between any two risers or treads within a single flight is limited to 3/8 in per IRC R311.7.5.1. Minimum headroom is 80 in (6 ft 8 in) per IRC R311.7.2. Maximum vertical rise between landings is 151 in per IRC R311.7.3.

A 7-3/4 in target uses the fewest possible risers, which is common in tight basement retrofits with limited overhead clearance.

A run this long needs a solid/housed stringer (13 ft 3 in limit) or an intermediate landing to break the flight.
Common Stair Layout Errors
- Measuring over finished flooring inconsistently. IRC R311.7.5.1 requires riser and tread dimensions from finished floor to finished floor, but carpet or tile thickness added after framing changes the actual riser height and can push a stair out of the 3/8 in tolerance.
- Guessing the step count before calculating riser height. Picking a round number like "14 steps" without dividing total rise by that count first often produces a riser that exceeds 7-3/4 in or falls outside the Blondel comfort range.
- Confusing tread depth with total run. Tread depth is the horizontal depth of one step; total run is tread depth multiplied by tread count. Ordering stringer stock based on tread depth alone results in lumber that is far too short.
- Ignoring the bottom-riser drop. A notched stringer's bottom cut must be dropped by one tread thickness so the first physical step matches the height of every other riser once the finished tread is installed.
- Exceeding cut-stringer span without adding support. A cut 2x12 in SPF spans only 6 ft unsupported per AWC DCA 6. Runs longer than that need a solid/housed stringer, an intermediate post, or a landing.
Handrails, Headroom, and Landings
A continuous handrail is required on at least one side of any stairway with four or more risers, per IRC R311.7.8, mounted 34 to 38 in above the tread nosing with at least 1-1/2 in of wall clearance.
Headroom must be at least 80 in, measured vertically from the leading edge of any tread to a parallel plane above the stair, per IRC R311.7.2. Any flight rising more than 151 in between landings needs an intermediate landing to break up the run, per IRC R311.7.3.

Frequently Asked Questions
The 2021 IRC R311.7.5.1 caps riser height at 7-3/4 inches for residential stairs, with a maximum variance of 3/8 inch between any two risers in the same flight. Pennsylvania and Rhode Island amend this to 8-1/4 inches under 34 Pa. Code §403.21. Commercial stairs under IBC §1011 are capped at 7 inches.
IRC R311.7.5.2 requires a minimum tread depth of 10 inches with a nosing that projects 3/4 to 1-1/4 inches, or 11 inches without nosing. Pennsylvania and Rhode Island permit 9-inch treads. Commercial stairs under IBC §1011 require 11 inches minimum.
Divide total rise in inches by your target riser height, then round up to a whole number. Divide total rise by that riser count again to get the exact, code-compliant riser height. Treads equal risers minus one for a standard flight, since the upper floor serves as the last tread.
Stringer length equals the square root of total rise squared plus total run squared. A 108-inch rise and 154-inch run produce a stringer length of about 188 inches, or 15 ft 8 in, meaning you would order 16-foot stock.
The Blondel formula, dating to 1675, states that two times riser height plus tread depth should total 24 to 25 inches. A 7-inch riser and 11-inch tread produce exactly 25, which is why that pairing is treated as the residential comfort standard, even though it is a guideline rather than a code requirement.
Per AWC DCA 6, a cut 2x12 stringer in SPF, Douglas Fir-Larch, or Hem-Fir spans a maximum of 6 feet unsupported, or 7 feet in Southern Pine. A solid, housed stringer spans up to 13 ft 3 in in SPF or 16 ft 6 in in Southern Pine because it keeps full structural depth with no notch.
IRC R311.7.8 requires a continuous handrail on at least one side of any stairway with four or more risers, mounted 34 to 38 inches above the tread nosing with at least 1-1/2 inches of wall clearance.
