Rectangular vs. Round Volume Math
Most concrete calculators only handle rectangular slabs. Holes and potholes are often round or irregular, and using a rectangular formula on a round hole overstates the material needed by roughly 27 percent, since a circle's area is smaller than the square that contains it.

Volume (cu ft) = Length (in) × Width (in) × Depth (in) / 1728
Round Potholes and Circular Pop-Outs
Volume (cu ft) = π × (Diameter / 2)² × Depth / 1728
This is the standard cylinder volume formula, pi times radius squared times height, converted from cubic inches to cubic feet by dividing by 1,728 (12 inches cubed). A typical 8 inch diameter pothole at 3 inches deep works out to about 0.087 cubic feet, less than a quarter of a single 60 lb bag of standard concrete mix.
💡 Tip - Round Up Your Measurement, Not Your Formula
If a pothole is irregular rather than a perfect circle, measure the widest diameter and use that. This slightly overestimates volume, which is safer than underestimating and running out of material mid-repair.

Mistakes That Waste Material or Cause Repairs to Fail

- Not squaring the hole edges: Quikrete's own pothole repair instructions call for chiseling the edges square before filling. Feathered or angled edges reduce mechanical bond and are the leading cause of patches popping loose.
- Using patch compound on a deep hole: Quikrete Concrete Patching Compound is rated for repairs up to 1/4 inch deep only. Holes deeper than that need standard concrete mix, not thin patch compound.
- Using the rectangular formula on a round hole: This overstates material by about 27 percent, since a circle occupies less area than its bounding square.
- Skipping bonding adhesive: Applying a concrete bonding adhesive to the exposed edges before patching improves adhesion, particularly on older or very dry concrete.
- Filling flush instead of slightly above grade: Quikrete's instructions recommend filling potholes 2 to 3 inches above the surrounding surface, then screeding level, to account for compaction. Filling exactly flush often leaves a slight depression once compacted.
