The Math Behind Bag and Cartridge Counts
Concrete repair materials are sold by weight, but coverage is a volume problem. A bag's published yield tells you how many cubic feet of wet material it produces once mixed. Your job is to match that volume to the space you're filling.
Patch and Resurfacing Volume
Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) / 12
Divide that volume by the bag's cubic foot yield to get a raw bag count, then round up, since partial bags cannot be purchased. A 10 percent waste allowance covers surface porosity, spillage, and uneven substrate absorption.
Crack and Joint Sealant Volume
Cartridge coverage depends on the cross-sectional area of the joint, not just its length. ASTM C1193, the standard guide for use of joint sealants, recommends a depth-to-width ratio rather than a fixed depth: for joints up to 1/2 inch wide, depth should equal width. For joints between 1/2 inch and 1 inch, depth should be about half the width, with a 1/4 inch floor. A standard 10.1 fl oz cartridge holds approximately 18.23 cubic inches of sealant (10.1 × 1.8047 cubic inches per fluid ounce).
Linear ft per cartridge = Cartridge volume (cu in) / (Width × Depth, in) / 12
💡 Tip - Use Average Depth for Irregular Spalls
Most spalls are not a uniform depth. The edges feather out while the center is deeper. Measure depth at three or four points across the damaged area and average them rather than using the single deepest measurement, which overstates material needed.

Rounding up to whole bags means this patch has enough material left over for touch-up work along the patch perimeter.

At this thickness, expect two coats for even color and texture per most resurfacer manufacturer application guides.
Expansion Joint Sealant

Coverage = 18.23 / (0.25 × 0.25) / 12 = 24.3 ln ft per tube
Tubes = 12 / 24.3 = 0.49 → 1 cartridge
Wider joints consume sealant fast: the same 12 ft crack at 1/2 inch wide would need about 4 cartridges, since coverage drops with the square of the width.
Where These Estimates Go Wrong
⚠ Mistakes That Change Your Bag Count
- Using full-depth concrete yield for thin patches: Standard bagged concrete mix yields (0.45 cu ft per 60 lb) contain coarse aggregate not meant for repairs under 2 inches. Using this yield for a thin patch understates the bags needed for the correct product.
- Measuring maximum depth instead of average depth: Feathered spall edges are shallower than the center. Using peak depth across the whole area overstates volume by 20 percent or more on irregular repairs.
- Applying resurfacer thicker than the rated maximum: Most resurfacers are rated to 1/2 inch per lift. Pouring a thicker single coat risks cracking or delamination per manufacturer application guides.
- Ignoring the ASTM C1193 depth ratio for wide joints: Assuming depth always equals width overfills joints wider than 1/2 inch, wasting sealant that also cures poorly when too thick.
- Skipping the waste factor entirely: Porous, broom-finished, or exposed-aggregate surfaces absorb more material than a smooth trowel finish. A 0 percent waste factor works only on very smooth substrates.
Surface Preparation Before You Buy Materials
Material quantity means nothing if the substrate is not prepared correctly. ACI PRC-546, the American Concrete Institute's guide to concrete repair, dedicates its concrete removal and surface preparation chapter to this exact issue: repairs bond to the substrate they are placed on, not to the material itself.
Remove all unsound, delaminated, or loose concrete back to solid material before measuring your final repair dimensions. This often means your finished repair area is larger than the visible damage. Clean the surface of dust, oil, and loose debris, and follow the specific product's data sheet for any bonding agent or primer requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on repair depth. A 40 lb bag of vinyl concrete patcher yields about 0.36 cubic feet, which covers roughly 34 square feet at 1/8 inch deep but only about 4.3 square feet at 1 inch deep. Multiply your area by the depth in inches, divide by 12, then divide by the bag yield to get the bag count.
Patch compound fills isolated spalls, holes, and pop-outs at 1/8 inch to 2 inches deep. Resurfacer is a thinner, broom or squeegee-applied product designed to cover an entire worn slab at 1/16 inch to 1/2 inch, restoring a uniform surface rather than filling a localized defect.
ASTM C1193 guidance used by sealant manufacturers sets depth equal to width for joints up to 1/2 inch wide. For joints between 1/2 inch and 1 inch, depth should be about half the width, with a 1/4 inch minimum. Going deeper than this wastes material without improving performance.
A 40 lb bag of Quikrete Re-Cap style resurfacer covers about 17 square feet at 1/4 inch thickness or about 65 square feet at a thin 1/16 inch broom coat. A 400 square foot driveway resurfaced at 1/4 inch needs roughly 24 bags before waste factor.
The two most common causes are insufficient depth (patches under 1/8 inch bond poorly) and skipping surface preparation. ACI PRC-546 Chapter 3 requires removing unsound concrete back to a sound substrate and cleaning the surface before any repair material is applied.
Not for thin repairs. Standard concrete mix contains coarse aggregate that will not bond or finish properly below about 2 inches thick. Patch compounds and resurfacers use finer aggregate blends specifically formulated for thin-section bonding to an existing substrate.
A standard 10.1 fl oz cartridge holds about 18.2 cubic inches of sealant. Divide that by the joint's width times depth in inches, then divide by 12 to get linear feet of coverage per tube. A 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch joint yields roughly 24 to 30 linear feet per tube.
