Planning note

This calculator separates wall face volume from footing volume so you get an accurate ready-mix order size, then breaks out labor, reinforcement, and backfill so you can compare a contractor bid line by line.

How the Wall Cost Formula Works

🧱

Wall face volume

Volume = Length × Height × Thickness

The vertical wall face is treated as a rectangular volume once thickness is converted from inches to feet.

Used for every wall type in this calculator.

📏

Footing volume

Footing Volume = Length × Width × Depth

Footing volume is calculated separately from wall volume, then combined for total ready-mix yardage.

Skipped when no footing is selected.

🪨

Backfill gravel

Gravel Volume = Length × Height × Backfill Depth

Applies only to retaining walls, estimating drainage gravel behind the wall face.

Retaining wall type only.

💰

Total installed cost

Total = Concrete + Footing + Labor + Reinforcement + Formwork + Backfill + Extras

Each cost category is itemized so contractor bids can be checked against a transparent build-up.

Per ACI 318-19 §11.6 minimum reinforcement guidance applied to rebar cost defaults.

Concrete is ordered by cubic yard, while wall labor and formwork are usually priced per square foot of wall face. This tool converts wall geometry into yardage and face area, then prices each cost driver independently.

Concrete Wall Price Lookup

Wall Cost Item Typical Range Source Context
Basic poured retaining wall $20 to $40 per linear foot Low-height walls under 3 feet with minimal reinforcement.
Full installed retaining wall $45 to $270 per linear foot Range widens with height, engineering, and site access difficulty.
Large-block retaining wall face $20 to $45 per square foot Common for block-based systems, useful as a wall-face cross-check.
Stamped or decorative wall finish $20 to $45 per square foot Added surface treatment cost on top of base wall pricing.
Sample 25 ft x 4 ft block wall project About $5,460 total Reference project used for sanity-checking total cost outputs.
Full project cost span $3,500 to $40,000 Basic repair up to full replacement across varied wall sizes.

Foundation Walls vs Retaining Walls

Foundation walls

Foundation and basement walls carry building loads and typically sit on a continuous footing. They rarely need backfill drainage gravel unless waterproofing calls for it, and reinforcement follows structural drawings rather than default assumptions.

Retaining walls

Retaining walls resist lateral soil pressure and almost always need backfill gravel plus a drainage path behind the wall face. Height drives cost quickly because soil pressure increases with wall height, which is why review is required above 4 feet under IBC 2024 §1604.

Freestanding and basement walls

Freestanding walls carry no soil load and often skip a heavy footing on residential fence-style projects. Basement walls behave like retaining walls on the exterior face but also need interior finishing considerations.

Reinforcement defaults

This calculator applies a 12 inch or 16 inch rebar grid cost model consistent with ACI 318-19 §11.6 minimum wall reinforcement ratios for cast-in-place concrete. Engineered projects may specify tighter spacing or larger bar sizes.

For yardage-only planning before pricing, the concrete wall calculator and concrete volume calculator are useful companion tools.

Example Scenarios

Scenario 1

30 ft foundation wall, 4 ft high, 8 inches thick

Wall face volume: 30 × 4 × 0.667 = 80.04 ft³

Footing: 16 in × 8 in × 30 ft = 26.7 ft³

Total = 106.74 ft³ ÷ 27 = 3.95 yd³

With 10% waste = 4.35 yd³

At $155/yd³ = $674.25 concrete

Foundation walls this size usually need engineered rebar drawings rather than a default grid, so treat this as material planning only.

Scenario 2

40 ft retaining wall, 5 ft high, backfill included

Wall face volume: 40 × 5 × 0.667 = 133.4 ft³

Backfill: 40 × 5 × 1.5 = 300 ft³ gravel zone

Wall yardage: 133.4 ÷ 27 = 4.94 yd³

Gravel yardage: 300 ÷ 27 = 11.11 yd³

At $45/yd³ gravel = $500 backfill material

At 5 feet this wall exceeds the common 4 foot threshold, so structural review is expected under IBC 2024 §1604 before construction.

Scenario 3

20 ft freestanding wall, 3 ft high, no footing

Wall face volume: 20 × 3 × 0.5 = 30 ft³

Footing: none selected

30 ft³ ÷ 27 = 1.11 yd³

With 10% waste = 1.22 yd³

Near short-load threshold, fee may apply

Small freestanding walls near 1 cubic yard often trigger short-load fees, making bagged concrete worth comparing for this scale.

Mistakes That Distort Wall Estimates

Mixing linear-foot and square-foot pricing

A $30 per linear foot quote and a $30 per square foot quote produce very different totals on a 5 foot tall wall. Confirm which unit a contractor bid actually uses before comparing numbers.

Skipping footing volume

Wall face volume alone underestimates the ready-mix order when a continuous footing is required. Footing volume should always be added separately, not folded into wall thickness.

Forgetting backfill and drainage on retaining walls

Backfill gravel and drainage pipe are frequently left out of early budgets, then appear as a surprise line item once excavation starts.

Assuming default rebar spacing covers engineered loads

The 12 inch and 16 inch grid defaults in this tool reflect common minimum practice, not a stamped engineering design for taller or load-bearing walls.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does a concrete wall cost per linear foot? +

A basic poured concrete retaining wall runs about $20 to $40 per linear foot for low walls, while full installed retaining wall projects range from $45 to $270 per linear foot depending on height, reinforcement, and site access.

  • How much does a concrete retaining wall cost per square foot? +

Large-block or poured concrete retaining walls commonly cost $20 to $45 per square foot of wall face, though decorative or stamped finishes can push that to $45 per square foot or higher.

  • Do concrete walls over 4 feet tall need an engineer? +

Retaining walls over 4 feet in height typically require structural review by a licensed engineer under IBC 2024 Section 1604 and most local building departments. This calculator provides planning estimates only, not stamped engineering.

  • What is included in concrete wall installed cost? +

A full installed cost typically includes ready-mix concrete, footing material, formwork, reinforcement, labor, and for retaining walls, backfill gravel and drainage. Delivery and short-load fees may also apply.

  • How is concrete wall footing volume calculated separately? +

Footing volume is calculated as footing width times footing depth times wall length, independent of the vertical wall face volume. Combined yardage determines total ready-mix order size.

  • What rebar spacing is typical for a poured concrete wall? +

Residential foundation and retaining walls commonly use number 4 rebar on a 12 inch or 16 inch grid per ACI 318-19 Section 11.6 minimum reinforcement guidance, though engineered designs may specify different spacing.

  • Is a poured concrete wall cheaper than a block wall? +

Poured concrete walls often have higher formwork labor cost but lower material handling cost than concrete block. Block walls can be more DIY-friendly for shorter retaining walls under 3 feet.
