Volume = Length × Width × Thickness

Slabs, walls, curbs, and strip footings are all reduced to rectangular volume formulas after unit conversion.

Thickness in inches is converted to feet first.

Round columns

Volume = π × r² × h

Cylindrical columns use a radius-based area multiplied by height, then multiplied by the number of columns.

Diameter must be converted to radius in feet.

Volume: 400 × 0.333 = 133.2 ft³

Wall work usually has higher forming and reinforcement cost than flat slab work, so total installed cost can rise much faster than raw yardage suggests.

Diameter: 18 in = 1.5 ft

Radius: 0.75 ft

Count: 6

π × 0.75² × 10 = 17.67 ft³ each

17.67 × 6 = 106.02 ft³

106.02 ÷ 27 = 3.93 yd³

Round work tends to involve form tubes or specialty forming, so contractor-installed pricing often runs higher than a slab with the same raw volume.

Common Estimating Mistakes

Ignoring short-load charges

Small orders can look cheap on a per-yard basis until dispatch adds a short-load fee. That fee can distort the cost of patios, post bases, and repair pours.

Pricing only the concrete itself

Concrete material is often just one piece of the total. Delivery, labor, reinforcement, grading, forms, and cleanup can equal or exceed the material line item.

Using square-foot pricing without thickness

A 4-inch slab and a 6-inch slab can share the same footprint but need very different yardage. Cost per square foot means little unless thickness and finish are known.

Skipping waste allowance

Ordering exact mathematical volume leaves no room for grade irregularities, subbase variation, spillage, or form bulge. Many planners add 5% to 10% as a starting point.
