Two Limits, One Job: Weight vs. Volume

Every roll-off dumpster has two separate limits: how many cubic yards it physically holds, and how many tons it is rated to carry. For light debris like drywall or wood framing, volume usually fills the box first. Concrete flips that relationship.

Solid concrete weighs about 150 pounds per cubic foot, or roughly 4,050 pounds per cubic yard. A 10-yard dumpster with a typical 1 to 3 ton weight allowance can reach its weight limit with only 2 to 3 cubic yards of broken concrete loaded, less than a third of the container's visible space. Ordering a bigger box does not fix this. The truck still cannot legally haul more than its rated weight.

Why Broken Concrete Takes Up More Room Than the Slab It Came From

When a solid slab is demolished, the broken pieces do not pack back together tightly. Air gaps between chunks of rubble increase the loaded volume even though the total weight has not changed. This is called the swell or bulking factor, and for broken pavement concrete it runs at approximately 67 percent above the original in-place volume. Working through a 20 ft by 20 ft driveway at 4 inches thick: the in-place volume is 20 × 20 × 4 / 12 = 133.3 cubic feet, or 4.94 cubic yards. At 150 pounds per cubic foot, that is 20,000 pounds, exactly 10 tons. Applying a 67 percent swell factor brings the loose debris volume to about 8.25 cubic yards once it is broken up and loaded.

Notice that 10 tons already exceeds every typical dumpster weight allowance up to a 30-yard container. This single slab likely needs a heavy-debris-rated box or more than one haul, even though its loose volume of 8.25 cubic yards would physically fit inside a single 10-yard container. This is the weight-versus-volume mismatch in action.

Weight, not volume, is the binding constraint here. This load exceeds typical allowances up to a 30-yard container and likely needs a heavy-debris box or split haul.

Troubleshooting: Reinforced Footing Underestimate
