Density by Sand Type
Each sand type carries its own dry bulk density, from 96 lb/ft³ for play sand to 100 lb/ft³ for concrete, mason, paver, and fill sand. This matches industry aggregate reference values, not a single fixed number.
Moisture Multiplier
Damp sand (typical bulk delivery) adds about 11% to dry weight; wet sand adds about 20%. The calculator applies this multiplier to the selected sand type's dry density before computing tons.
Waste, Bags & Cost
Final volume includes your waste factor. Bag count divides adjusted volume by bag volume (weight ÷ 100 lb/ft³ reference). Cost multiplies tons by your price per ton, plus any delivery fee.

What Sand Type Actually Changes in Your Calculation
Sand sold for construction is not one product. Concrete sand must meet ASTM C33/C33M grading limits, with a fineness modulus between 2.3 and 3.1 and no more than 3-5% material passing the No. 200 sieve. This grading lets it fill voids between coarse aggregate correctly in a concrete mix ratio without weakening the paste.
Mason sand and fill sand are typically similar in density to concrete sand but are not always graded to ASTM C33, so they should not be substituted into a structural concrete pour. Play sand is washed and screened for rounder, finer particles safe for skin contact, which also makes it lighter, about 96 lb/ft³ dry versus 100 lb/ft³ for concrete sand.
Why Moisture Changes the Order
Bulk sand rarely arrives bone dry. Most suppliers store sand outdoors, so a "damp" condition, roughly 111 lb per cubic foot, is the realistic default for delivered sand. If you order by weight (tons) using a dry-density assumption, you may receive less usable volume than expected once the sand dries out and settles. If you order by volume (cubic yards), moisture does not change how much space the sand fills, only how much it weighs on the scale.

Five Mistakes That Lead to Short or Wasted Sand Orders
Using dry density when the supplier bills by weight
If you calculate tons using 100 lb/ft³ (dry) but the delivered sand is damp at 111 lb/ft³, you will receive about 10% less volume than you planned for the same tonnage. Set the moisture selector to "Damp" for most bulk deliveries.
Confusing tons and cubic yards at the order desk
Some suppliers sell sand by the ton, others by the cubic yard. Confirm which unit your supplier quotes before ordering, and convert using this calculator's tons-per-cubic-yard output rather than assuming a flat 1:1 ratio.
Screeding paver bedding sand too thick
Per ICPI Tech Spec 2, bedding sand should stay at a nominal 1 inch, never exceeding 1.5 inches. Thicker bedding sand loses its interlock under vehicle or foot traffic, and pavers can rut or shift within 12 to 18 months.
Using play sand density for a concrete or paver project
Play sand runs about 4% lighter than concrete or paver bedding sand and is not graded to ASTM C33. Swapping sand types without adjusting density in your calculation introduces a small but avoidable error in both weight and cost.
Skipping the waste factor on excavated or compacted areas
Hand-dug or machine-excavated bases are rarely perfectly flat. A 2-inch nominal depth on an uneven subgrade often averages closer to 2.5 inches in practice. Use at least 10% waste for any ground-contact sand layer.
Example Scenarios From the Field

Scenario 1 — 250 sq ft Paver Patio, 1 in Bedding Sand
Area: 250 sq ft | Depth: 1 in = 0.0833 ft
Volume: 250 × 0.0833 = 20.83 cu ft = 0.771 cu yd
Sand type: Paver bedding, damp (111 lb/ft³)
Weight: 20.83 × 111 = 2,312 lb = 1.16 tons
With 10% waste: 1.16 × 1.10 = 1.27 tons
Bags (50 lb, dry-volume reference): ≈45 bags
A contractor who priced this job using dry density (100 lb/ft³) would have under-ordered by roughly 100 lb, or two bags. Confirming the supplier's moisture condition avoids a mid-job supply run.
Scenario 2 — Swing Set Fall Zone, 18 × 12 ft
Fall zone area: 18 × 12 = 216 sq ft
Required depth: 9 in (CPSC Publication 325, Table 2, for falls up to 4 ft)
Sand type: Play sand, damp (107 lb/ft³)
Volume: 216 × (9/12) = 162 cu ft = 6.0 cu yd
Weight: 162 × 107 = 17,334 lb = 8.67 tons
With 10% waste: 8.67 × 1.10 = 9.54 tons
Fall zone area, not just the equipment footprint, drives the quantity. Most playground fall zones extend 6 feet beyond the equipment perimeter in every direction per CPSC guidance, which is why this example is larger than the swing set itself.
Scenario 3 — Troubleshooting a Short Delivery
Ordered: 5 tons of concrete sand, assuming 100 lb/ft³ dry
Expected volume: 5 × 2,000 ÷ 100 = 100 cu ft (3.70 cu yd)
Actual delivered condition: Damp, 111 lb/ft³
Actual volume received: 5 × 2,000 ÷ 111 = 90.1 cu ft (3.34 cu yd)
Shortfall vs. expectation: 9.9 cu ft (about 10%)
The tonnage was correct, but the volume assumption was not. When ordering by weight, always confirm whether the quoted density is dry or as-delivered to avoid a volume shortfall on site.
Sand Calculator - Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on depth. At a 1-inch depth (typical paver bedding per ICPI Tech Spec 2), 100 sq ft needs 8.33 cu ft (0.31 cu yd), about 0.42 tons of dry sand at 100 lb/ft³. At a 2-inch depth, that doubles to 16.67 cu ft (0.62 cu yd, roughly 0.83 tons). Multiply area by depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards.
One cubic yard of dry sand weighs approximately 2,700 lb, or 1.35 tons, at a planning density of 100 lb per cubic foot. Damp sand, the condition most bulk-delivered sand arrives in, runs closer to 111 lb/ft³ (about 1.50 tons per cubic yard). Wet, saturated sand can reach 120 lb/ft³, or 1.62 tons per cubic yard.

Yes. Dry sand weighs about 100 lb/ft³, damp sand (the state most bulk-delivered sand arrives in) weighs about 111 lb/ft³, and fully saturated wet sand can reach 120 lb/ft³. That is roughly a 20% weight increase from dry to wet at the same volume, which matters when a supplier bills by the ton rather than by the cubic yard.
A standard 50 lb bag of sand holds approximately 0.5 cubic feet, so it takes about 54 bags to equal one cubic yard (27 cu ft ÷ 0.5 cu ft per bag). For a 60 lb bag, expect around 45 bags per cubic yard; for a 100 lb bag, around 27 bags per cubic yard.

CPSC Publication 325, Table 2, sets minimum loose-fill depths by fall height: 9 in of sand for equipment up to 4 ft. Fall zones typically extend at least 6 ft beyond stationary equipment and further for swings, per CPSC guidance.
Concrete Mix Fine Aggregate
