What Actually Drives Rebar Cost

Rebar pricing looks simple until you get three different numbers from three suppliers for the same job. The difference usually comes from four variables: how the price is quoted, the bar size, the grade, and the coating.

Per Ton vs. Per Pound vs. Per Foot

Mills and large suppliers quote by the ton. As of early 2026, domestic Grade 60 rebar has traded around $1,440 per ton, equivalent to about $0.72 per pound. Retail suppliers and small hardware chains quote by the linear foot or the individual stick, and that price already has the weight-based cost, handling markup, and small-quantity premium built in.

A $0.72 per pound mill price does not translate directly into cheap material at a hardware store, because retail rebar for a #4 bar can run $0.75 to $1.00 per foot once handling and small-order markup are added. Confirm which method your quote uses before comparing two numbers.

Grade and Coating Change the Base Price

Grade 40 (40,000 psi minimum yield) and Grade 60 (60,000 psi minimum yield) rebar are defined by ASTM A615. Grade 60 is now the standard stock item at most suppliers, so Grade 40 sometimes costs the same or slightly more per ton due to lower production volume, not because it uses less steel.

Coating adds a separate premium. Epoxy-coated rebar, covered under ASTM A775, typically costs 13 to 17 percent more at the mill level, roughly $180 to $240 per ton. At retail quantities the premium can climb to 30 to 50 percent because coated stock needs separate handling to avoid chipping the coating. Galvanized and stainless rebar cost considerably more again, with stainless sometimes reaching $9.00 per foot for small bar sizes in specialty grades.

Stock Lengths Force Rounding

Rebar comes in fixed stock lengths, most commonly 20 feet at retail and 20, 40, or 60 feet through supply houses. A takeoff calling for 347 linear feet of #4 bar does not mean you buy exactly 347 feet of material. You buy whole 20-foot sticks, which means 18 sticks (360 feet) to cover the need, with the extra 13 feet becoming offcut waste or usable elsewhere on the job. When comparing supplier quotes, ask for the price per full stock stick at your specific bar size and length. Two suppliers quoting the "same" per-ton price can end up with different total costs once minimum order fees, cutting charges, and delivery are added for smaller jobs.

Sample Calculation: Pricing a Driveway Rebar Order

🛣 Scenario: 20 ft x 12 ft Driveway Slab, #4 Bar, 18 in Grid Spacing

Takeoff result: 348.7 linear feet of #4 rebar needed (from a rebar grid takeoff, already including 10% waste)

Weight: 348.7 ft x 0.668 lb/ft = 232.9 lb of steel (per ASTM A615 weight per foot)

Grade / coating: Grade 60, black (uncoated)

Stock length: 20 ft sticks → 348.7 ÷ 20 = 17.4 → round up to 18 sticks

Material cost at $1,480/ton Grade 60 #4 rate: 232.9 lb × ($1,480 ÷ 2,000) = $172.35
Tie wire (6 lb/ton estimate): 0.116 tons × 6 lb = 0.7 lb ≈ negligible, rounds to minimum coil purchase

Rebar Pricing Mistakes That Blow Up Budgets

Comparing a per-ton quote to a per-foot quote without converting. A $1,440/ton mill price and a $0.85/ft retail price cannot be compared directly until both are converted to the same unit using the bar's weight per foot.

Forgetting the coating premium. Epoxy-coated rebar adds 13-17% at the mill and often more at retail. Budgeting the black-rebar price for a spec that calls for epoxy coating (common near coastal or marine environments) creates a budget shortfall.

Ignoring stock-length rounding. A takeoff showing 347 linear feet does not cost 347 feet worth of material; it costs whatever whole number of stock sticks covers that length, which can add 5-10% to the material bill beyond the raw takeoff number.

Leaving out tie wire and chairs. These are small individually, but a large mat project can need hundreds of chairs and several coils of tie wire. Skipping them from a budget is a common source of change-order friction later.

Not confirming who pays delivery. Some suppliers roll delivery into the per-ton price for large orders; others charge a flat fee for small orders below a minimum threshold. Ask before assuming either way.

Buying Rebar: Suppliers, Minimums, and Timing

Most metal supply houses set a minimum order for delivery, commonly one ton or more, below which a will-call pickup or a flat delivery surcharge applies. Small DIY and residential jobs under a few hundred pounds often make more sense through a hardware store or lumber yard that stocks 20-foot sticks, even though the per-pound price runs higher than mill pricing.

Rebar pricing tracks scrap steel and hot-rolled coil markets, so quotes can shift within weeks during periods of tariff changes or supply disruption. If a quote is more than 2-3 weeks old, confirm current pricing before finalizing a material budget.

Grade and coating requirements come from project drawings or local code, not personal preference.
