How the Lumber Calculator Works
Board feet are calculated with the standard volume formula: thickness in inches times width in inches times length in feet, divided by 12. One board foot equals 144 cubic inches of wood, the volume of a piece 1 inch thick by 12 inches wide by 1 foot long.
For dimensional softwood like 2x4s and 2x6s, lumber yards tally and price by the nominal size, so the calculator uses the labeled size by default. For custom or rough-sawn stock you can switch to actual dimensions. In framing mode it counts field studs from the on-center spacing, then adds plates, corner studs, and opening framing.
Lumber Size Reference: Nominal vs Actual Dimensions
Lumber is labeled by nominal size, but the milled board is smaller after drying and surfacing. These minimum dressed sizes come from PS 20-20, the American Softwood Lumber Standard. Length is accurate: a 10-foot board is a full 10 feet.

What a Board Foot Measures
A board foot is a unit of volume, not length. It equals 144 cubic inches: a slab 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 1 foot long. Two boards of different shapes can hold the same board footage. A 1x12 and a 2x6, each 1 foot long, both equal one board foot.
This matters for ordering. Linear feet only track length, so a 2x4 and a 2x10 of the same length read identically by linear foot even though the 2x10 has far more wood. Hardwood and bulk softwood are sold by board foot precisely because it captures that volume.
Hardwood thickness uses a quarter-inch system: 4/4 means one inch rough, 8/4 means two inches. After surfacing on two sides a 4/4 board finishes near 13/16 inch, but it is tallied and priced at the rough 4/4 thickness.
Sample Calculations
Example 1: Board feet and cost for a deck frame
You need 24 pieces of 2x6 SPF, each 12 feet long, for joists.
- Board feet per piece: (2 x 6 x 12) / 12 = 12 board feet.
- Total before waste: 12 x 24 = 288 board feet.
- Add 10% waste: 288 x 1.10 = 316.8, round to 317 board feet.
- At $0.70/BF: 317 x $0.70 = $221.90 in lumber.

Example 2: Studs for a 20-foot load-bearing wall
A 20-foot exterior wall, 8 feet tall, 16 inches on-center, with one door and two windows.
- Field studs: (20 x 12 / 16) + 1 = 16 studs.
- Corners and intersections: add 4 studs.
- Openings: 3 openings x 4 framing studs = 12, plus 2 windows x 3 cripples = 6.
- Plates: double top plate plus bottom plate = 3 rows x 20 ft = 60 linear feet.
- Stud total: 16 + 4 + 12 + 6 = 38 studs (8 ft 2x4s), plus plate stock.

Mistakes That Throw Off Lumber Estimates
- Mixing units in the formula. Board feet need length in feet but width and thickness in inches. Putting all three in inches and dividing by 12 overstates volume twelvefold. Divide by 144 if every dimension is in inches.
- Using actual size where the yard uses nominal. Calculating a 2x4 at 1.5 x 3.5 under-tallies against a yard that prices by nominal 2 x 4. Match the basis your supplier uses.
- Counting only field studs. The basic (length / spacing) + 1 ignores corners, intersections, and openings. A room with a door, a window, and two corners can need 10 to 15 more studs than the simple count.
- Skipping the second top plate. Load-bearing walls need a double top plate per IRC R602.3.2. Counting one plate row short fails inspection and undersizes the order.
- Not rounding boards up. You cannot buy 26.4 boards. Round the final piece count up after applying waste, or you arrive short mid-pour.
Buying, Delivery, and Code Requirements
Lumber sells by the piece at home centers and by the thousand board feet at wholesale yards. For a full house frame, a lumberyard package quote can run thousands less than piece pricing. A unit of 2x4x8 studs holds 294 pieces.
Pressure-treated lumber carries a use-category tag. Ground contact (UC4B) is required for posts and any wood touching soil or concrete; above-ground rated boards (UC3B/UC4A) are for railings and deck surfaces. Using the wrong grade is a code violation and invites rot.
Wall framing follows IRC Section R602.3 for stud spacing, R602.3.2 for the double top plate, and Table R602.7 for header sizing over openings. Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply thickness in inches by width in inches by length in feet, then divide by 12. A 2x6 that is 10 feet long is (2 x 6 x 10) / 12 = 10 board feet. If all three dimensions are in inches, divide by 144 instead.
The 2x4 label is the nominal size, taken before drying and surfacing. The finished board measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches, a minimum dressed size set in PS 20-20. The labeled length is accurate, so a 10-foot 2x4 is a full 10 feet.
Use (wall length in feet x 12 / spacing in inches) + 1, rounded up. A 20-foot wall at 16 inches on-center needs 16 field studs. Add 2 to 3 per corner, 1 to 2 per intersection, and 4 framing studs per opening, plus cripples above and below windows. IRC R602.3 sets the spacing.
For dimensional softwood, yards tally and price by nominal size, so use 2 x 4 in the formula. For rough-sawn or hardwood stock priced per board foot, measure and use the actual size. This tool uses nominal for standard softwood and lets you enter custom actual dimensions.
A 10% allowance covers most straight-cut framing. Use 15% for angles, diagonals, and complex decks or fences. Simple cuts can run 5% to 7%. Always round the final board count up, since partial boards are not sold.

Linear feet measure length only, so dimensional lumber is often sold per piece or per linear foot. Board feet measure volume, combining thickness, width, and length, and are used for hardwood and bulk pricing. The same length of 2x4 and 2x10 differs sharply in board feet.
