Pool Deck Concrete Calculator 2026 - Volume, Cost, Bags and Rebar Estimator

The IRC requires a minimum 4-inch concrete pool deck for residential use. For most real-world conditions - outdoor furniture, lounge chairs, grills, and regular foot traffic - 6 inches is the practical standard. Equipment pads for hot tubs, spas, and pumps need 6-8 inches due to concentrated point loads. In northern states with freeze-thaw cycles, go to 6 inches with 4000 PSI concrete and 5-6% air entrainment.

Thinner slabs (3 inches) are structurally unsafe for pool decks and will crack under normal use within 1-3 years. Always use reinforcement - at minimum wire mesh (6x6 W1.4xW1.4) for 4-inch slabs, rebar (#3 at 18 inches) for 6-inch slabs. For a rectangular pool: Total outer area = (pool length + left deck + right deck) x (pool width + near deck + far deck). Subtract the pool water surface (pool length x pool width). The result is the net deck area to pour. Example: 16x32 pool with 5-ft sides and 8-ft ends: (16+10) x (32+16) - (16x32) = 26x48 - 512 = 1,248 - 512 = 736 sq ft.

For oval pools, multiply the correction factor of 0.785 to the length x width for the pool surface (it's an ellipse, not a rectangle). For freeform or kidney pools, get the actual pool surface area from your pool builder's plan - do not estimate it. Using the wrong pool area by even 10% throws off your concrete order by half a cubic yard or more. The 2024 IRC Table R402.2 requires a minimum of 3500 PSI for concrete exposed to severe weathering, which covers pool decks in most of the continental USA. In mild-weather states (Florida, southern California, Hawaii), 3000 PSI may be locally permitted, but 3500 PSI is still recommended for pool deck applications due to chemical exposure from pool water splashing. For stamped concrete pool decks, always use 4000 PSI minimum. The higher strength holds surface stamp detail better, resists micro-cracking during stamping, and provides a longer service life before resealing. Yes. All concrete pool decks should slope a minimum of 1/8 inch per foot away from the pool edge toward the deck perimeter. This positive drainage prevents standing water on the deck, reduces algae growth at the coping joint, and keeps chemical-laden water from pooling and etching the deck surface. A 1/4 inch per foot slope is preferred and provides better visible drainage.

Never slope the deck toward the pool. While pool water draining back into the pool seems logical, it carries fertilizer, lawn chemicals, oil, and debris from the deck surface into the pool water and increases chemical and filter load significantly. Set your forms and screed rails at the correct slope before pouring - adjusting slope on hardened concrete requires grinding or an overlay, both expensive fixes. One 80 lb bag of concrete yields 0.60 cubic feet when mixed with water. To find bags needed: take your net deck area in square feet, multiply by deck thickness in feet (4 in = 0.333 ft, 6 in = 0.5 ft), divide by 0.60 to get bags, then multiply by 1.10 for 10% waste. Example: 400 sq ft deck, 4 in thick: 400 x 0.333 / 0.60 x 1.10 = 244 bags (80 lb).

For any project over 1.5 cubic yards (about 68 bags of 80 lb), ready-mix concrete is more practical and usually less expensive than bagged. Ready-mix minimum orders are typically 1 yard, and short-load fees of $100-$200 apply under 4 yards at many plants. For a typical 900 sq ft deck at 4 inches, ready-mix delivery is almost always the right choice - bagging 600+ bags is not practical for most crews. A freshly poured concrete pool deck should be protected from all foot traffic for the first 24 hours. Light foot traffic (workers, inspections) is safe at 3-5 days when surface hardness reaches approximately 1500 PSI. Move outdoor furniture and deck accessories onto the deck after 7 days (about 70% design strength). Never fill the pool or expose the deck to full pool water splashing before 28 days - water chemistry at the expansion joint before full cure causes staining and edge degradation.

Wet-cure the deck for the first 7 days by keeping it moist - use a curing blanket, wet burlap, or a curing compound to retain moisture. Concrete cured wet for 7 days achieves 20-30% higher final strength than air-cured concrete in the same time. Wait a minimum of 28 days after pour before applying any sealer to a concrete pool deck. Applying sealer too early traps bleed water and causes whitening, flaking, and adhesion failure. Use a penetrating silane/siloxane sealer for broom finish decks - it soaks into the concrete pores, repels water and chlorine, and leaves no surface film to peel or wear off. Reapply every 3-5 years. Apply at 200 sq ft per gallon in two thin coats.

For stamped concrete pool decks, use a topical acrylic sealer (solvent or water-based) that brings out the color and creates a light sheen. Topical sealers wear off faster (2-3 years) and require re-coating more frequently but provide better color enhancement.
